PLUS SIZE PREGNANCY
By Kmom
Browse through a few maternity stores and you might conclude that fat women never get pregnant. Apparently, our society can barely acknowledge that women of size date, let alone make love or have babies!
But women of size do make love, get pregnant, and have babies. Unfortunately, little information is available about pregnancy at larger sizes, and most of what is available is highly negative and full of scare tactics. The Business of Scare Tactics
Many websites with information about pregnancy at larger sizes are actually supported by weight loss surgeons or diet companies, hardly objective parties. They recognize that many of their clients are women of childbearing age who have been told that they “must” lose weight before they have children. They know this a market ripe for the picking and that their best sales tactic is fear.
So these websites publish distorted risk summaries, highlight only the studies that show the worst outcomes, imply that complications are inevitable for most fat women, and tell worst-case scenario stories as if they were everyday events. Some authors even suggest that obesity during pregnancy is akin to child abuse.
It is a misperception that fat women must lose weight in order to have a baby. In reality, many women of size have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies without losing weight first. This is the underground truth that the Profiteers in the War On Fat don’t want you to hear.
More Balanced Information Needed
What women of size need is honest information about the possible pros and cons of pregnancy at larger sizes. It’s wrong to pretend that there are no potential risks, just as it is wrong to pretend that every obese pregnancy results in disaster. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.
It is clear from research that women of size are more at risk for some pregnancy complications. The strongest risks generally associated with obesity in the literature are for high blood sugar or high blood pressure. Because pre-existing diabetes or chronic hypertension can cause great harm to a baby, women should be tested to be sure these are normal before conception. This goes a long way to lower the risks for problems.
